Winter fitness: Safety tips for exercising outdoors

The colder weather has officially arrived and for outdoor workouts, that means making a few adjustments. If you don’t enjoy hitting the treadmill but also don’t like working out in cold weather, we have some tips to help you maintain your outdoor fitness routine. See 5 tips below.

1.    Hydration
Always remember to stay hydrated! Oftentimes we don’t think about drinking plenty of water before, after and during winter workouts. Although it is extremely important to keep hydrated during the summer, it’s equally important during the winter. If you wait until you’re thirsty, that means you are already dehydrated. Drink plenty of water before your workout. Keeping hydrated also helps with dry skin that many people experience during the winter months. Steer clear from consuming too many sports drinks unless you are exercising for a sustained amount of time.

2. Layering
If you didn’t know already, there is a proper way to layer your clothing when going for a cold, outdoor run or walk. Make sure your first, or bottom layer is a moisture wicking, synthetic material that draws sweat away from your body. Cotton should be avoided as it holds sweat to your skin which can keep you cold and possibly cause chills. The second layer should be a fleece material for insulating and keeping your body warm. The third and final layer, which is the top layer, needs to be wind or water proof.

Don’t forget to protect your ears and hands. When you run or walk outside, your body heat is directed towards your core leaving your extremities colder. Always use a head wrap or ear muffs and gloves.

3. Warm-up
Colder weather equals tighter muscles and joints. It’s easy to pull a muscle when you’re exercising in wintry temperatures. Before your workout, practice dynamic movement stretches to get your blood flowing and body warmed up. Try bringing your knees up to your chest, doing walking lunges or taking a brisk lap before you begin.

Do you experience side pains during colder weather when you exercise? Try wearing a face mask. It helps warm the air before it reaches your lungs, which might lessen the chance of side pains.

4. Shoes
Whether you live in a blizzard-prone climate or a town that only sees patches of ice on a rare occasion, it’s important your shoes have safe traction. Try using a trail shoe during the winter. This doesn’t mean a heavy, hiking shoe. New Balance offers trail/running shoes that are light-weight and have great traction for slippery floors.

5. Mix it up
As much as you might despise hopping on the treadmill, try to mix up your exercise routine at least once a week. Our body will always work harder in extreme temperatures and giving it a break every now and then is a good idea. Try an indoor class or strength training in an indoor setting. It’s also a great idea to practice a less strenuous workout one day a week to give your body a break. You’ll feel better in general and your muscles will appreciate it!

Fish Information

Tuna is Ok sometimes but bad sometimes, very up and down. So far I have big eye tuna and come new tuna on Wednesday.

Live Scallop comes today. If you are looking for this, better come weekdays. It is hard to get it at weekend.

Sujiko ,fresh salmon roe is hard to get this year. The price is soaring in Japan and Japanese buyers come to Alaska to buy. They ruin the market here.

November 14 is World Diabetes Day.

An estimated 30.3 million people of all ages—or 9.4% of the U.S. population—had diabetes in 2015. It is a big problem all over the world.  Almost 20 % of Japan population is diabetes now. Too much food temptations but just eat simple way as 1970’s Japanese people. Eat fish, seaweed, mushroom, soy product and vegetable. Please avoid high calorie, high cholesterol, frozen food, instant food, junk food. And we need to exercise, walk run and more.

Skipping Breakfast Associated with Hardening of the Arteries

Skipping breakfast is associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis, or the hardening and narrowing of arteries due to a build-up of plaque, according to research published today in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Eating a healthy breakfast has been shown to promote greater heart health, including healthier weight and cholesterol. While previous studies have linked skipping breakfast to coronary heart disease risk, this is the first study to evaluate the association between breakfast and the presence of subclinical atherosclerosis.

Dietary fish, n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid consumption, and depression risk in Japan: a population-based prospective cohort study.

An early ecological study showing a significant inverse correlation between per capita fish consumption, that is, primary dietary sources of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and 1-year prevalence of depression1 created new interest in the link between depression and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). One meta-analysis found low peripheral levels of n-3 PUFAs, EPA and DHA in patients with depression compared with controls.2 In addition, the magnitude of the effect size of differences in the levels of n-3 PUFAs was larger in analyses restricted to studies that used DSM criteria for major depressive disorder (MDD). Several recent meta-analyses of clinical trials indicated that n-3 PUFA supplementation has a beneficial effect in patients with depression3, 4, 5, 6 and showed that EPA-predominant formulations are more efficacious than placebo for the treatment of DSM-diagnosed MDD.6 The therapeutic mechanism of n-3 PUFAs remains unclear, but it is assumed that n-3 PUFAs have diverse neurobiological activities related to immunomodulation, anti-inflammation, neurotransmission and neuroprotection, contributing to their anti-depressive effects.7 Read more? http://www.nature.com/tp/journal/v7/n9/full/tp2017206a.html?foxtrotcallback=true

Fish Information

This is very surprise. Boston Blue fin tuna is coming today. ¼ back size is 60 lbs, it means the total weight of this tuna is 300-350 lbs. The last time I received was almost a month ago and was really good. I am expecting this tuna.

Uni supply is changing. Japanese uni cannot get this week because of typhoon. But Maine uni is coming back. It was quarter for 6 months but we can catch now. California uni is also coming back.

Kinki, thorn head is on the menu now. It is a tiny fish but the price is more expensive than toro. It is called white fish toro. Akamutsu,Black throat is also getting popular.I but Akamutsu 2 times a week but always sold out. I feel the people finally understand what is good Japanese fish. The price is high but still much cheaper than NYC and other restaurants here.

Monday is Sushi Day.

All Togo orders are 20% off. These offers are Monday only. We extend it this month. I think I do this for a while.

September is Wine month.

The temperature is still high but patio season is coming back. It cools down at evening and good for wines. We can offer all bottles wines 30% off this month. I do Beer special in October, Sake special in November.

Eating meat linked to higher risk of diabetes

The Singapore Chinese Health Study reveals increased risk of diabetes with higher intake of red meat and poultry, partially attributed to the dietary iron content in these meats. While a plant-based diet is generally considered healthier than a meat-based diet in preventing the risk of diabetes, not all meats affect the risk equally. As Professor Koh Woon Puay of Clinical Sciences at Duke-NUS Medical School (Duke-NUS), and her team found out, higher intakes of red meat and poultry are associated with a significantly increased risk of developing diabetes, which is partially attributed to their higher content of heme iron in these meats. This study provides the foundation for evidence-based dietary recommendations to the Singapore population in mitigating diabetes risk and reducing the healthcare burden of this chronic condition.

I think once a week of meat is fine. We need to take some protein from meat that I feel. Eating meat increase fighting spirit for business or sports I feel it. I do eat steak before the golf game or when I get tired. This is all mental issue actually.  My meal is 60-80% vegetables and I take fish every 2 days. Meat is once a week.

Linton Hopkins just opened a new steak house at Sun Trust Ball park. C Ellet’s Steak House has oyster and steak. I will go there soon to dine.

Fish Information
I have big tuna from Pacific Ocean. It is just red meat tuna only with no toro. I will not buy farmed tuna from Japan. It was last month and was a big mistake because of too much fat. That fat was not healthy at all. I try to buy wild caught tuna and look for natural made toro.
King salmon season is in. I have Alaskan and Japanese. Both are good.
Uni supply is not bad. Japanese one is not easy this week because of typhoon. I have Mexican uni this week. I believe this is from California peninsula.

Monday is Sushi Day.
We have Monday Special. Selected wines and sakes are $5 by the glass. Sapporo Draft beer is $3 by the glass. All Togo orders are 20% off. These offers are Monday only. We extend it in August, I think I do this for a while.

Stanford researchers find intriguing clues about obesity by counting steps via smartphones
Stanford researchers using smartphones to track the activity levels of hundreds of thousands of people around the globe made an intriguing discovery: In countries with little obesity, people mostly walked a similar amount per day. But big gaps between people who walked a lot and those who walked very little coincided with much higher levels of obesity.

I feel we have to walk more. I walked 4 hours at Golf course last Sunday. I walked 2-3 hours in Barcelona during on vacation. Walking is the best way to reduce the risk of obesity and diabetes. We have to walk and try to avoid using wheelchairs when we get old.
